It is a fact that can be well authenticated that many of the prevailing loose ideas about the sanctity and permanence of the marriage tie is due to so-called "coon" songs. Many a divorce has been brought about by the low ideals engendered by such music. Can we expect to be a moral nation if the most popular songs set forth ethical standards, measured by the ideals of the African? Shall we stoop so low as to let such base ideals serve as patterns for our lives? Life is too noble, too precious, too exalted to be held down to such low levels as these. Oh, that we could get a conception of what a life's true value is! Then we would not keep our faces toward the ground and bestow our ambitions on base follies. Music, the perfect vehicle of life's noblest emotions, should not be so degraded as to become the vehicle for its basest passions. The true end of music is to ennoble, to purify, to exalt. And, coupled with words, its aim is to give expression to the soul's highest longings. The aesthetic principle of music is unity. It is thus an expression of love, for love is the power that tends to unify creation. Divine music is an expression of divine love; human music, springing as it does, from the divine in man, is also an expression of divine love. And all degradation of music in its use is sacrilege. We have tried to show, as briefly as possible, that there is a grave danger to our civilization that lurks in the melody of popular song, springing from the power of music, the repetition of the words, and the neglect of people in general to demand pure, exalted; ennobling sentiments in the words of the songs they sing.
